of India’s tea workers now remains uncertain. You probably also know
that in the past 3 days approximately half a million tea workers
in India’s province of West Bengal have been on strike, crippling the
tea industry in the region, including the famous district of Darjeeling.
[A VENEZUELAN RADIO MARTI/RICHARD BLAIR] How can the U.S. House of Representatives vote to create a broadcast
propaganda outlet aimed directly at destabilizing a country -
particularly one with which the U.S. has diplomatic relations (however
strained) and interconnected economic interests?

Tony Saunois (CWI Secretary, London) reported on Monday, July 18th
that a nationwide poll in Britain asked the question "who is the
greatest philosopher of all time." Thankfully George Bush was unable to
vote in the poll given that his answer to this oft posed question is
always "Jesus." Despite significant media pressure by major news
outlets including the lofty Economist magazine, all calling for the
likes of Adam Smith or David Hume (come on - are these guys actually
"philosophers"?), the polls came in overwhelmingly for none other than Karl Marx, winning 28% of the vote.
["DISCREPANCY" UNDERCUTS MERCK'S VIOXX DEFENSE/LINDSAY BEYERSTEIN]
The New York Times reports that "At Vioxx Trial, a Discrepancy Appears to Undercut Merck's Defense".
The discrepancy in question is a mismatch between what Merck knew about
the cardiovascular safety of the anti-inflammatory drug Vioxx and what
it told doctors. In laymen's terms this type of discrepancy is usually
known as "lying."
