I KNOW IT WHEN I SEE IT

SOME ARE SURPRISED  Some are not.  The surprise may be any of us can sense anything more at all in this most unfeeling age.  In short time we have gone from I feel your pain to I feel nothing.  We drift in a sordid sea awash with bodies dead, the flood upon this world for more than forty days and forty nights,  and morality waiting on the wing unsure of where to land.

WE FIND OURSELVES in flight before a flock of birds of prey, tearing at the living, ripping on the flesh of the dead.  What we have set to air in winds of war may not return in good time.  The falcon may not hear the falconer.  We may drown in the crimson tide before it finds its crest unless we remember the saving stroke.  One hand on a hand met in peace with caress may cure all unrest.  Feel what is found in that one touch. Touch what is common in us all.

I quite frankly do. Though I find this unacceptable, I won’t pretend to be surprised or outraged. Not after the lies that led to war, the panic equivocations that led to GITMO, and the general failure of leadership that has led to where we are now.

TWISTED PSYCHES [Digby] I cannot help but think that something has gone terribly wrong here. From the top of the hierarchy ordering sexual humiliation techniques, to obscure web-sites selling war gore and pictures of girls next door together, this is a very sexualized war and it's damned strange, particularly coming from a regime that pretends to be an arbiter of strict sexual morals.

It's clear that the leadership of this country is extremely concerned with consensual sex between two adults but they find images of sexual violence and kinky torture techniques to be thoroughly acceptable among soldiers and useful to the war effort. This is a very odd perception and one that LEADS US BACK to the conclusion that something extremely unhealthy has invaded our body politic.

If you sample the Skinny Dip and Chips at the buffet, our bouncer/lifeguard Nurse Ratched says no swimming for fifteen minutes.  Randall Patrick McMurphy and the Red Headed Strangers will be playing on Friday Night.  The Trophy Husbands will sit in and jam on Saturday. It is not easy to face up to the truth about what America is doing today and at the same time look toward a future in which Americans will be deeply ashamed of this part of our history. I try, and I don't always succeed. The temptation is either to cling to a vision of a perfect country and never acknowledge the evil, or to sneer that this horror is what America has become, and give up. We need a Virgil to guide us through hell without despair.

Twilight shines upon a strange land where a man must apologize for truth while another rules by lies.  The dark pit of Guantanamo is the abyss of the souls, both for those who must endure it, as well for those who see it.  What we cannot see for what it is and somehow rise above, surely we will drown in.   Truth  itself now takes the most brutal beating.  If we forget now the torture of the least, others most surely will strongly and later remember.
