. . . SAW WALK THE LINE yesterday and I came away very impressed. I am not sure what surprised me more: how many hours Joaquin Phoenix must have watched to get the feel of Johnny Cash as right as he did. The posture of the shoulders and the tilt of the head conveyed Cash and genuine emotion. The aspect of the face particularly the mouth went beyond a mere impersonation as well. Phoenix has risen from the one note performance as the emperor in Gladiator.
HATE TO SAY IT Reese Witherspoon as June Carter kicked ass. Light years beyond anything she has ever don. Phoenix and Witherspoon both sang the songs. While the renditions could never duplicate the American classics, what they possessed was soul, unvarnished and raw.TRUTH IS RAW its cry savage in its intensity. The scene where the legendary Sun Records producer Sam Phillips tells Johnny his gospel songs have nothing and then Phoenix starts to play Folsom Prison pulled me right in. The lesson is be true to what is most true in you. Johnny Cash was and Walk the Line is true to him. See it.
DISAGREE WITH THE BARTENDER? Have your say. Here. Now. Thanks. TBogg has some goods at his newly formed Open Snark Media.
