BE MY GUEST (WORKER)

AMIDST A HOST OF PROBLEMS at home and abroad, Bush starts the push refinish his image.  A key issue Bush advisors feel he can work to get more favorable play is on immigration issues, an area always divisive in times of economic flux.  Illegal immigrants (bad) will be caught, cheap guest workers will be encouraged (good) So the sales pitch begins. [White House transcript]

"We have a comprehensive strategy to reform our immigration system. We're going to secure the border by catching those who enter illegally, and hardening the border to prevent illegal crossings. We're going to strengthen enforcement of our immigration laws within our country. And together with Congress, we're going to create a temporary worker program that will take pressure off the border, bring workers from out of the shadows, and reject amnesty."

BUSH THINKS he is out front on this. Whether anyone will be behind the man behind in the polls remains to be seen.

SEMANTICS AND REALITY crash into each other.  Bush got the ultimate in party insult from a fellow Republican.[WaPo]

Will Adams, a spokesman for Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.), said his boss was not convinced. He called the president "Clintonesque," for advocating amnesty without actually calling it that. "It's new lipstick on an old pig," Adams complained. He said a guest-worker program would reward immigrants who entered the country illegally.

TIP TO BUSH: The Heretik is sure somebody said "Guest Worker" sends the wrong message.  See Europe. But send “Temporary Worker Program” back to rewrite.  Tom Maguire takes the title for Snark King: I have long accepted the conventional wisdom that immigration reform would be a divisive momentum sapper for the Bush Administration.  Evidently, there is no momentum left to sap - fresh from his triumphs with Katrina and Miers, and with the situation in Iraq up in the air, Bush is going to tackle immigration.  Happy Holidays.

ON TOM TANCREDO AND THE CONSTITUTION [WaPo] . . . TANCREDO (R-Colo.) has a bold idea to stop illegal immigration: Deny automatic citizenship to the children of undocumented immigrants. "There is general agreement about the fact that citizenship in this country should not be bestowed on people who are children of folks who come into this country illegally," he told the Washington Times. General agreement? Perhaps among Mr. Tancredo's friends in the House but not among the framers of the 14th Amendment. Indeed, any such modern consensus would have a small problem in the text of the Constitution, which is, inconveniently for anti-immigrant demagogues, not subtle on the point.
