FROM THE SAME PEOPLE WHO BROUGHT YOU A NUCLEAR CLOUD
Before the War, Dick Cheney and Condoleeza Rice went out of their way rattle people about nuclear weapons they were sure Saddam Hussein would use. Only their view was accurate and they knew exactly what they were doing. They used that information to scare people just before the 2002 mid-elections. Cheney and Rice both lied. Now they are using similar tactics to hide the truth about the run up to the war.
Monday, Rice, now U.S. secretary of state, told Chris Matthews from MSNBC-TV's “Hardball,” “I would never claim that the exact nature of this insurgency was understood at the time that we went to war.”
Vice President Dick Cheney also told a National Press Club luncheon Monday, “Any suggestion that we did not exhaust all alternatives before we got to that point, I think, is inaccurate.”
In fact, current and former diplomats tell NBC News they understood from the beginning the Bush policy to be that Saddam had to be removed — one way or the other. The only question was when and how.
.......................
Rice’s well parsed declarations are pathetic. Look at this line. I would never claim that the exact nature of this insurgency was understood at the time that we went to war. Beyond the fact that the insurgency came into existence after the war started, how is one to understand things exactly about anything? Exactly. The Bush Administration claimed it knew exactly what was going on in Iraq before the war, to their benefit. Now exactly doesn’t exactly apply. Incompetence can not be offered as an excuse for incompetence.
Cheney has no shame about lying behind the word inaccurate. The truth is any alternatives besides all out war were treated not as exhausted. These guys treated alternatives as smoking exhaust as they drove their car over a cliff. Nothing was going to stop them, not a look in the mirror, not a look to see if anybody was driving along side them. They just drove the car right over the cliff.
NOTE TO NBC AND OTHER "JOURNALISTS": If diplomats are telling you what they knew. . . you might want to report it. Often.
Reporters need to start calling dissembling what it is. Exactly and inaccurate are words that have lost their meaning in the mouths of Rice and Cheney. Words without true meaning that suggest something else are lies. If the media cannot yet come to publish more about Downing Street, such news outlets should think about supporting fewer lies.
